1958年6月7日出生於美國明尼亞波利的王子既是多產的歌手、作曲家，同時也是製作人兼多種樂器的演奏，直到目前都繼續有新作的推出。而他在八○年代可謂是一超級巨星，除了與麥可‧傑克森分庭抗禮外，也建立了他自己的音樂王國：the time、the family、sheila e.、vanity 6、apollonia 6…無不依附於王子的旗下。王子本身結合流行、搖滾、節奏藍調、放克…等音樂元素創造出獨特且新鮮的音樂型態，再加上【紫雨】、【櫻桃月下】、【浮士繪之橋】電影的推出，王子的人氣到達了顛峰。
王子在1993年曾推出三張一套精選「the hits/the b sides」，2001年則有「the very best of prince」，2006年再推出兩張一套的「ultimate」，這三套精選各有其時代意義或聽眾訴求：「the hits/the b sides」是對王子最輝煌的年代（1979-92）做一總結；「the very best of prince」只有一張cd，是王子轉換唱片公司後，在華納時期的單曲整理，也是新一代樂迷認識王子的最佳入門；而最新出版的「ultimate」包含了王子在華納時期的代表作以及單曲b面歌曲，收錄排行代表作如”1999”、1984年終冠軍單曲”when doves cry”、成名作”i wanna be your lover”、慢板抒情”purple rain”及”sign ‘o’ the time”…當然一應俱全。不過兩張一套共28首歌的「ultimate」不僅收錄王子的單曲，有11首歌都是特別版本，如”little red corvette”是舞曲版、”raspberry beret”是12吋單曲版、”kiss”是加長版、”thieves in the temple”和”cream”是混音版…這些特殊版本的收錄讓王子新的精選更具可聽性、更是王子的死忠樂迷的必備精選。(專輯未附歌詞)
