成立於1989年英國倫敦的suede，由創作首腦主唱brett anderson及吉他手bernard butler、貝斯手mat osman、鼓手simon gilbert所組成。他們於1993年所發行的首張專輯《suede》，是張打破性別界限的華麗搖滾之作，這張專輯發行之後便強勢站上英國金榜冠軍，成為英國樂團十年內銷售最快的一張作品，不僅讓nme將他們封為「英國最佳新進樂團」，更在當年以新人之姿拿下mercury music prize英國水星音樂獎。suede的主唱brett anderson其宛如麂皮紋理般的霧面嗓音，在優雅中傳遞著頹廢音律，加上bernard butler歇斯底里的吉他手法，讓他們在90年代與oasis綠洲樂團、blur布勒樂團、the verve神韻樂團…等英倫搖滾英雄，共同創造出britpop風起雲湧的輝煌盛世。1994年，suede發行了第二張專輯《dog man star》，被知名媒體選為「1001 albums you must hear before you die」、「all time top 100 albums」，成為他們最經典的專輯之一，然而在製作過程，卻因為理念不合，導致兩位創作核心主唱brett anderson及吉他手bernard butler的意見分歧，造成了bernard butler的離團。1996年，樂團找來新血吉他手richard oakes及鍵盤手neil codling，發行了第三張專輯《coming up》，這張空降英國金榜冠軍的專輯，締造出5首暢銷單曲，讓樂團順利拿下白金唱片，也讓這張專輯成為樂團最暢銷的專輯。1999年發行的第四張專輯《head music》，發行首週依舊站上銷售冠軍寶座，但主唱brett anderson卻開始陷入濫用藥物危機，樂團終究在2002發行《a new morning》之後，於2003宣布解散。

brett anderson在歷經與昔日亦敵亦友的bernard butler另組the tears樂團，以及發行多張個人專輯之後，終在2010年與suede好友們再度重組復出演唱，此消息一出，讓許多曾經心碎的樂迷，重燃滿腔熱血。就在樂團重組之際，樂團也宣布推出概念精選輯《the best of》，專輯封面特地請來擅長捕捉人像中憂鬱氣息，也曾幫多位音樂人作畫的美國藝術家elizabeth peyton設計打造。《the best of》是由suede以及知名製作人chris potter (the verve、u2、blur)共同重新製作母帶，以2cd形式，跨越十年歲月地完整記錄suede最華麗的風采，而此精心製作的概念選集推出之後，各家專業媒體果不其然地紛紛獻上近滿分高評，包括：allmusic（4.5/5）、clash (9/10) 、drowned in sound (9/10) 、pitchfork media(8.7/10)、yahoo music (10/10)。cd1網羅了出道首支單曲「the drowners」、傳唱度極高的「beautiful ones」、電氣化搖滾代表之作「electricity」、英國金榜top3單曲「trash」、樂迷票選的鍾愛作品「obsessions」、清新優美的「everything will flow」…等18首經典歌曲。cd2則收錄了前三張專輯的多首歌曲，以及珍貴的b-side作品一共17首經典歌曲。此亞洲獨占影音珍藏版的dvd特別集結了「she's in fashion」、「saturday night」、「the wild ones」…等5首最具代表性的音樂錄影帶，以及「this hollywood life」、「she」，2首2010於巴黎重組話題時刻的現場演出，還有主唱brett的精彩訪問！

當oasis無限期休團、blur團員專注於各自的發展、the verve暫停演出，那個屬於英倫搖滾的90年代也更添傳奇色彩，然而回顧那個時期，若沒有了suede的優雅頹靡，就稱不上完整。■2011.04■<文 / 結糯米。>
