被誉为史上最好的歌曲创作者之一，保罗赛门(paul simon)1941年10月13日出生於美国纽泽西州。1957年跟他的高中死党art garfunkel以”tom and jerry”为名一起写歌录了单曲”hey school girl”，但市场反应不佳，旋即解散。保罗仍旧创作不缀，分别以”tico and the triumps” 和”jerry landis”为笔名持续写歌录音。1964年再次投入唱片界与art garfunkel组成simon and garfunkel二人重唱组合，发行首张专辑【wednesday morning 3 a.m.】。运气欠佳的他们，再次遭遇销售挫败，simon and garfunkel解散，保罗则离开美国前往英国寻求发展，加入英国民谣圈，期间制作英国民谣歌手jackson c. frank首张专辑，也发表了个人第一张专辑【the paul simon songbook】。回到美国後【wednesday morning 3 a.m.】的制作人tom wilson将”sound of silence”这首歌加入电吉他丶贝斯丶鼓变成一首摇滚民谣，1966年simon and garfunkel再次出击，终於以【the sound of silence】专辑名利双收。接下来simon and garfunkel以专辑【parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme】丶电影原声带【the graduate 毕业生】丶【bridge over troubled water】得到商业以及乐评空前成功，成为1960年代最风光的民谣组合。
1970年simon and garfunkel正式解散後，保罗赛门再度开始个人的唱片事业。1972年发行同名专辑中，出现有别於simon and garfunkel专辑里的音乐元素，例如”mother and child reunion”的雷鬼音乐(在牙买加的首都kingston录制)，1974年专辑【there goes rhymin' simon】出现告示牌单曲榜亚军单曲"kodachrome"，滚石杂志则将此专辑选入史上最佳500张专辑名单里。1975年【still crazy after all these years】专辑里的"50 ways to leave your lover"荣登告示牌单曲榜冠军，成为他个人最畅销的单曲。1980年主演电影one-trick pony并发行同名电影原声带，1983年【hearts and bones】专辑依旧精彩，1986年【graceland】是一张揉合世界音乐元素的1980年代流行经典专辑，他突破南非当时的种族隔离，与南非黑人音乐人合作录制，其人道主义精神获得举世赞扬，并成为葛莱美奖最佳年度专辑。进入90年代，以【the rhythm of the saints】专辑继续对世界音乐与流行音乐融合的探索，丰富的南美音乐节奏，将流行音乐推向更精致的层次。1997年他以自己制作编写的百老汇舞台剧【the capeman】为材料发表【songs from the capeman】专辑，2000年发表【you're the one】专辑，2001年以此专辑提名葛莱美年度最佳专辑，成为史上第一位连续5个10年都获得此项项提名的艺人。2006年个人第11张专辑【surprise】发表，依旧佳评如潮。超过半世纪的音乐生涯，他的作品无啻是流行音乐的经典。【世纪典藏the essential】双cd收录36首完整历年精彩歌曲，从冠军歌曲"50 ways to leave your lover"到世界音乐流行经典"you can call me al”，从70年代忧郁悠远的”still crazy after all these years”到他个人的最佳创作歌曲”graceland”全部收录。唯有此辑封存保罗赛门的音乐精华，邀您进入这位流行音乐小巨人迷人的音乐世界。
